Clane 1-18 Carbury 0-15
Saturday afternoon at Conneff Park saw Clane play Carbury in the Conneff Challenge Cup. Both sides were able to field 2 teams and both games were played simultaneously with the winner decided on the aggregate score. Since our reporter couldn't be in 2 places at once we only have a report on the match played on the main pitch.
Clane came out of the blocks fast with the wind at their backs and raced into an early lead. After 6 mins Clane laid down a marker of their intent when they raised the green flag. Sam McCormack fielded a long ball and laid it off to Cathal Geoghan, who clinically dispatched it to the net. Carbury led by Morgan o Flaherty continued to chip away and added some quality scores into a strong breeze. Clane continued to dominate however with wonderful scores from Brian McLoughlin, Shane O'Sullivan and Kyle Devey and went into the half time break 5 points up.
The second half began on the same note with Shane O'Sullivan scoring a point after a powerful run direct from the throw in. Both teams traded scores over the next few minutes. Clane then began to re-assume control in the game, keeping possession well, and taking their scores when close to goal. One such score from Ethan O'Donoghue epitomised this after 20 passes he kicked over a great team score. Carbury pressed forward in the closing minutes looking for a goal to tie up the scores, however superb saves from Jack McCroary, and then the block of the game from Cathal Egan to deny a certain goal kept Clane in front. Clane added on two points in the last few minutes and went on to win by 1-18 to 0-15.
Best for the home team were Cathal Egan, Chris Byrne, Ethan O'Donoghue, supported by Kyle Devey, Shane O'Sullivan & Brian McLoughlin.
